Standardised, networked, forward-looking
Johanniter establishes efficient and seamless processes with an integrated overall system according to plan

Johanniter opted for the Dedalus HealthCare systems early on and introduced them in a coordinated manner in all acute and specialist clinics in the network. Today, doctors, nursing staff and patients benefit from standardised processes and a high degree of digitalisation.
“The entire healthcare system is in a state of flux, and all players are faced with a variety of tasks. For us at Johanniter, this means planning wisely and with foresight.” This is how Heike Schröder, Lead Manager Portfolio Strategy at Johanniter HealthCare-IT Solutions GmbH, describes the challenges facing the healthcare provider. Due to regional growth, Johanniter could form clusters for cross-sector supply chains – from home to outpatient, inpatient, aftercare and rehab. However, these must then be organised locally.
Regional cross-sectoral care as a target image
In order to meet the challenges, Johanniter GmbH, the sponsoring company based in Berlin, founded the Department of Medical Management and Medical Strategy, which has been headed by Dr Christine Marx, MBA, since September 2024. “We operate at the interface between all central departments and the operational units, focusing on medical care in the broadest sense. We are concerned with topics such as the shortage of specialists, treatment quality and patient safety as well as the development and implementation of the overall strategy,” says the Chief of Healthcare Management and Strategy, summarising the tasks of her department. A central aspect is cooperation with IT on the topics of digitalisation, digital transformation and innovation.
Johanniter’s medical strategy proclaims trans-sectoral care for patients in the respective catchment areas, which ensures good communication between the specialists of all stakeholders. “Our vision is to provide complete care from a single source, avoiding interface problems and focusing on individual needs. This patient-centred medication also generates a very high level of satisfaction among our service providers”. Dr Marx is convinced that digitalisation, and therefore IT, is a key component of this.
As much as possible in one system
Johanniter has been pursuing a holistic system approach since 2015. “We decided on this standardised structure with all the hospitals in the network at the time. After an intensive selection process, the decision was made in favour of ORBIS. One Johanniter facility had already introduced this system in 1999. We defined a blueprint for the rollout in all facilities,” explains Heike Schröder. This means that around 80% of the hospital information system (HIS) is preconfigured. The advantages are apparent: synergy effects between the Johanniter hospitals, standardised user interface and philosophy, fast and smooth rollout as well as simplification for Johanniter HealthCare-IT Solutions GmbH, the IT service provider of the Johanniter inpatient network, for example in master data maintenance. Today, ORBIS is used across the board as a patient-managing system, supplemented by individual specialised applications as well as the enterprise content management system HYDMedia, the business intelligence solution TIP HCe and DeepUnity in radiology.
