Bridging the Last Mile – Applicability of Imaging AI

Seen from today´s perspective, most hospitals would face serious problems if they had followed the famous recommendation of Geoffrey Hinton in 2016 that “people should stop training radiologists now”. Five years after Hintons famous quote not much has changed in the daily clinical work of radiologists worldwide. However, when looking at the number of new AI applications in the imaging market that have emerged in recent years, Geoffrey Hinton definitely had a point. Small startups as well as the established players have entered the radiology market with imaging applications based on AI. In contrast to the dramatically increased supply, the number of AI applications that is frequently used in clinical decision making is still small. Moreover, most of the AI applications are imaging features for narrow indications rather than comprehensive products that could significantly facilitate daily routine work. The talk will try to give a glimpse in the future on the further development of AI applications in the clinical context. We will try to predict which imaging features will be implemented first and which applications might be irreplaceable for future radiologists.
