NWAS Maternity Digital Innovation Project using OneResponse shortlisted for HSJ Patient Safety Award
The project, “Embedding a Digital Maternity Decision Support in NWAS”, has been recognised for its contribution to improving patient safety and supporting frontline clinicians in the assessment and management of maternity patients in pre-hospital settings – using OneResponse as its electronic patient record system.
Dedalus is delighted to congratulate North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) on being shortlisted for a prestigious HSJ Patient Safety Award for its pioneering maternity digital innovation project, delivered through the OneResponse electronic patient record (EPR) platform.
The project, “Embedding a Digital Maternity Decision Support in NWAS“, has been recognised for its contribution to improving patient safety and supporting frontline clinicians in the assessment and management of maternity patients in pre-hospital settings.
NWAS became the first ambulance trust in England to digitally embed a maternity decision support tool directly within its electronic patient record system, OneResponse.
Led by the trust’s MAMAs (Maternity Assessment and Management in the Ambulance Service) team through the NWAS Quality Improvement Academy, the initiative transformed paper-based maternity guidance into an integrated digital workflow accessible to clinicians at the point of care.
Developed in collaboration with the Trust’s Digital Applications Team, maternity specialists, clinical safety experts, frontline clinicians and patient representatives, the tool supports ambulance clinicians caring for women who are pregnant or have recently given birth. By providing evidence-based guidance within the clinical workflow, the solution helps identify risks earlier, supports escalation where required and assists clinicians in directing patients to the most appropriate care setting.
The project demonstrates how digital innovation can strengthen patient safety and clinical decision-making in complex and time-critical maternity situations.
Since its introduction, the maternity decision support tool has been used in more than 85 per cent of maternity-related incidents attended by NWAS within its first three months of operation.
Early findings suggest the tool is helping clinicians identify risks more consistently, make timely decisions and improve access to appropriate care pathways for women and babies.
The success of the initiative has also attracted national attention. Learning from the project has contributed to recommendations within the NHS Maternal Care Bundle, supporting the wider adoption of digitally embedded maternity decision support tools across ambulance services. NWAS continues to share its experience and best practice with other trusts seeking to enhance maternity safety through digital transformation.
