Clinical Coordination Center

Real-time healthcare information in action

Digital supported management of operational processes has in many hospitals not been a key focus area for CIOs or chief medical officers. The focus on traditional clinical suites like EHMR, PACs, RIS, ECM among others has been favored and operational management has been left for the special logistics department to handle. Furthermore, hospital operation management has often been defined as equal to enterprise resource planning and supply chain management in which asset management, transportation of equipment and restocking of decentralized storage depots, are some of the primary areas of responsibility.

There are great synergies in thinking hospital operation management in a more integrated context, where both planning/scheduling, service logistics and clinical logistics (patient flow management) is seen as interconnected and must be planned as such. To support that vision, a clinical coordination center (or command and control center) is an important enabler.

The Clinical Coordination Center enables healthcare organisations to access, cleanse, integrate, ingest and semantically ‘tag’ their own data held across multiple clinical and operational systems, delivering contextual and actionable real time insights for informed and timely decision making. It is an open platform ecosystem offering the building blocks to leverage machine learning (ML) models from third-party AI partners and carry out predictive analytics. Furthermore, the platform offers out-of-the-box self-service analytics dashboards for data investigation as well as the ability to close the loop by triggering events based on clinical/operational decision support, providing a notification or alert to the clinician to act in a timely manner.

Key Benefits

  • Control decisions (alerts and notifications) should be devolved wherever possible to front line operations, to support ‘localized’ decision
  • Data transparency will increase the data quality, improve data governance and operating model. The CCC will enable the healthcare ecosystem to be more proactive than reactive.
  • Ease the transition of care by supporting the data exchange at the point of care and activating all the standard operations that characterize the transition itself.

Key features

  • Effective performance of the Clinical Coordination Center operating model is real time ‘visibility’ of the resources being deployed on which to make ‘optimizing’ decisions.
  • Machine learning/ deep learning and Artificial Intelligence algorithms can be used to predict future outcomes based on the metrics available.
  • Data tracking and reporting, together with benefits tracking and continuous improvement capability is a structural business requirement that must be established as one of the operating functions within the Coordination Centre
