Boosting teleradiology services with cloud technology

Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires

The need for new technology to create a teleradiology network

The Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires is the leading healthcare institution in Argentina. The Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Service is one of the most renowned centres in the world, both for its cutting-edge technology and for its renowned medical team. With an annual volume exceeding 1,2 million examinations, the Hospital decided to take its experience and resources beyond its walls two years ago. They created a teleradiology service based on a new business model to provide study reports remotely to external medical institutions.

The great challenge for the Hospital Italiano

The main technical challenge that the Hospital Italiano had to face was the need not to mix images of patients taken within the Institution with those from outside the walls. In addition, they required a system that would allow them to scale the teleradiology network “without limits”, without depending on expensive infrastructures and, at the same time, guaranteeing maximum availability and security to the external hospitals.

“At the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires, we work with high quality standards and safety, and our local PACS system for internal use within the Hospital was not the best option to bring excellence to the clients of our teleradiology services”. That is why they decided to implement a new PACS system completely independent from the local system.

How Dedalus Delivered

Dedalus implemented its cloud-native solution PACSonWEB, of the DeepUnity suite, on the Amazon Web Services cloud.

“The greatest complexity of teleradiology projects lies in being able to integrate all the different systems of the network centers into a single system to ensure high quality data exchange. Achieving this requires a combination of technology and know-how. The capabilities and flexibility of PACSonWEB to capture the information correctly at the source, and the experience of the implementation team, allowed us to secure this”. Alejandro Varettoni, Business Development Manager Digital Imaging Dedalus.

Results Achieved

One year later, the Hospital Italiano is offering its teleradiology services through PACSonWEB to 6 radiology centers and hospitals with more than a hundred connected radiologists.

  • Total cross-hospital integration: A single solution for all the users: Hospital Italiano radiologist staff, external hospitals and patients.
  • Cost optimization: Working on a SaaS model will allow them to benefit from high profitability since they don´t have to pay for future needs.
  • Improved Accessibility: PACSonWEB facilitates radiologists daily work, allowing them to access imaging examinations and diagnose via web, at any time and place.
  • Faster reporting: By automating the reading process and assigning work by subspecialty, the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires has minimized the time to deliver results.
  • Data Security: Compliance with high data protection standards ensures patient data security.
