Leeds WasteShark Initiative Secured with Support from Dedalus and Local Businesses

Dedalus is playing a key role in supporting the Leeds WasteShark initiative, helping the Leeds Waterways Cleanup project and protect the local environment. Through both corporate sponsorship and community support, the future of this pioneering Leeds waterways cleanup drone has been secured.

Crowdfunding and Sponsors Keep Leeds WasteShark Afloat

The campaign to save the WasteShark for the Leeds Waterways Cleanup has exceeded expectations. Thanks to the combined efforts of twelve local business sponsors and more than 400 public donations, over £45,000 has been raised. This funding will not only keep the WasteShark operating for another year but also add an extra day of cleaning each week.

Sponsors include Dedalus, Vastint UK (Aire Park), Canal River Trust, Mustard Wharf, Royal Armouries, Fullers Foods, Stericycle, Create (Leeds Dock), Tetra Tech, Redmayne Bentley, CPW, and Bowmer and Kirkland. Their support highlights how Leeds businesses are driving environmental change and helping to deliver cleaner waterways for the community.

Cleaner Waterways for Leeds

Since its launch in 2024, the Leeds WasteShark has removed more than 4,000 litres of organic matter, plastics and debris from local rivers. That’s the equivalent of over 4,000 plastic bottles. With the new funding, the WasteShark is now targeting the collection of an additional 4,500 litres of rubbish across 2025 and 2026,  which helps to reduce plastic pollution and keep Leeds waterways safe for wildlife and people.

How the WasteShark Works

The WasteShark drone in Leeds is an electric, remote-controlled vessel. It is capable of scooping up to 160 litres (50kg) of waste in a single trip, and uses  GPS, collision avoidance technology and a built-in camera, ensuring it removes rubbish efficiently. It can safely do this without harming wildlife or disrupting other water users. Leeds is the first UK city to deploy this innovative water-cleaning technology.

Community and Business Partnership for a Greener Leeds

The crowdfunding campaign was supported by more than 400 local residents and organisations. Including Leeds Civic Trust, Yorkshire Design Group, Biffa, Kiss Branding, and Aberfield Communications, who provided expertise free of charge.

Paul Ellison, Chairman of the Leeds Waterfront Group, said:

“We’re blown away by the response to our Leeds WasteShark initiative. WasteShark is unique to our city and it’s hugely gratifying to know that so many people share our desire to continue making a difference at a local level.”
